If you want to learn to play piano well, you cannot just sit around and goof off, trying to play what you hear on the radio. You have to take some lessons. I first started to seriously learn to play piano on the Internet. There were some good online piano lessons, and I was surprised by how much I could get just by watching a few basic drills. A lot of the process of learning piano is practicing some simple drills. Once you see a video of someone playing those drills, you can learn how to do them yourself. Then, you can practice at home over and over again until you can do them effortlessly. If you want to learn to play piano like one of the greats, however, you eventually need to work face to face with someone. This can be an issue if you want to learn to play piano and don't have a lot of money. After all, professional lessons aren't cheap. The best way to do it in my opinion is to learn all you can on your own. Instead of getting piano lessons every week, get them every other week. Between the piano lessons, practice fanatically. Spend every moment you can drilling and drilling again. That way, when you get your lessons, you can move on to something new. You make the most of your time and money and learn to play piano much quicker than you would otherwise. I would not say that it's the only way to do things, but it does work a lot better than just stumbling through on your own. It certainly worked for me. Some take private lessons from a tutor while others prefer to learn on their own. It is a much easier instrument to learn if you afford a private instructor. Practice is very important either way.
