Looking For Record Deals

There are a few bands out there that love to play local shows, and they really are not concerned about much else. However, many of them have a dream of getting record deals, even when they know that dream is probably a bit unrealistic. Today, these deals are not what they once were, as some bands break out on their own online, and then they are offered something if a company believes they have some staying power. If you are looking for a record deal, keep these things in mind.

Age is a factor when it comes to record deals, though there are always exceptions. A band must put a lot of time and energy into recording, touring, and making other public appearances. That requires a lot of energy and a lot of endurance. Those giving out or offering record deals are aware of this, and they will shy away from those that are past a certain age. Things could happen for anyone at any age, but remember that your age in regards to being in a rock band is probably a bigger issue than you think it might be.

There are different types of record deals too, and some bands sign on thinking they are getting one thing when they are getting something else. Some are just for distribution, which means they will press what you have and get it out there, but there is not much in other areas where record companies usually push and promote. There are many record deals that are limiting in ways that bands could not imagine, and some are even signed to put them ‘on a shelf’ to essentially eliminate competition for another signed band, and to be sure they are not snatched up by someone else.

There are always tricky contracts in any occupation, but there are many that will give out bad contracts for record deals. Bands get so excited about the possibilities that they sign whatever is put in front of them without really reading through and thinking about what each term of the contract means. If you are offered any contract for any aspect of your band, run - do not walk - to the nearest entertainment lawyer to have them read it for you. It is the smartest move that you can make. They can tell you what a contract says, what it means for you, and if it would be smart to sign or not.

Summary: Looking for record deals is something most singers and bands are all after. having a record deal means someone is actually paying for your music. This is usually a good sign for up and coming artists. When you do receive a contract, make sure to have a lawyer review it carefully and make sure you are not being taken advantage of.
