Stage Lighting

When you go to your next concert to see your favorite act, you should look around to see all that goes into a show. There are many people who work behind the scenes so that you can have the best experience you can imagine. You may take all of this for granted, but then again, most people do. There is a crew who works with the sound engineer to make things sound perfect, as well a lighting crew who light up the stage for a spectacular show. Many people don’t think much about stage lighting but with it, you wouldn’t have such a great experience at any show.

Stage lighting is essential for any artist. When you go to see a concert there are countless hours spent before the show that allow you to have the best experience. There are people who make a living climbing up in to the rafters to hang lights and adjust them for the stage lighting technician. I have a friend who does this, and he has told me stories of actually falling asleep up there. Not only is he nuts, he must have to be used to being up that high to fall asleep up there. If you want great stage lighting, however, there has to be people who are willing to do this for every show on the road.

Broadway plays and other smaller productions also rely on great stage lighting. You may not think about it when you see a show, but the lighting is set as it is for a reason. There may not be as much going on with the stage lighting during a play as apposed to a rock show, but the lighting is just as important. They lighting is set to highlight what needs to be seen, and to also give a realistic yet clear view of what is going on. Without proper stage lighting the audience would literally be left in the dark.

If you would like a career in stage lighting, you have to start at the bottom. You can take lighting classes at some colleges, but you really have to get out there and work on things. You might want to start by doing lights for a local band if you want to get into concert stage lighting, or you may want to volunteer to help with local plays and other productions if you want to get into drama related stage lighting. You need to gain experience in order to be taken seriously, as this is one career that you will learn what you need to know by doing the job. You can learn from books, but that won’t take you very far.
