Talent Contests

I have been involved in talent show contests for several years now. As a matter of fact, I think I have been doing them since elementary school. Of course, the first talent contests I was in were not really contests. My parents weren't the type to push me. They never entered me in beautiful baby contests, and they did not audition me for acting jobs, or anything like that. It was actually my own idea to get involved in the school talent show. I sang a song and danced around on stage. At the time, I thought I was amazingly talented. Looking back at the video tape, I can see that I was awful. Nonetheless, it was my first taste of the thrill of competition and the desire for attention and approval from a large crowd of people.

As I got older, my involvement with talent contests has become more focused. I am pretty targeted towards music nowadays. Most of the talent competitions I enter involve singing and songwriting. I tried acting, but I was not all that good at it. I think I can hack it in one or two roles, but I'm not a very flexible actor. Unless I can play myself, I can't play the character at all.

Talent contests are a great way to get involved in the entertainment industry. Don't get me wrong – you can't really count on them to making connections. Talent competitions are generally not crawling with producers eager to sign new talent. There are exceptions, of course, but the main purpose of a talent contest is to develop your ability as an artist.

You see, in talent contests you are putting yourself out there to be directly judged for your performance. You can gain some fame and local connections there, but the main thing is to do as well as you can. A talent contest will allow you to see what people look for and what sells. That way, you can cater your performance to the people who come to watch it. You can also improve your self-confidence on stage – an invaluable skill for anyone who is involved in performance. You can also look at what other people are doing and maybe find some good influences out there. It is alright to steal bits from other people's acts as long as you don't wholeheartedly lift the whole thing. If you think it would work for you, take it.

Summary: Talent contests have been around for a very long time. They can be a great way to get noticed and stand out among others. Perks include fame and meeting people which could be a help for your career. If you have any talent at all, you will find a way to make a living at it.
