Teaching Piano Lessons
I have been teaching piano lessons for about six years now, and in that time I have had a really fascinating array of students. When I first started out, I was mostly teaching piano lessons to elementary school students in the local district. One local public school had an enrichment program where each child was to learn an instrument. They were especially encouraged to learn piano because learning keys is a great way to learn about music theory in general.
Teaching piano lessons to those kids was great. You can really tell the ones who practice because they learn so quickly. Children naturally learn quickly, and music is no exception. Everyone I know who teaches music lessons to children comments on how rewarding it is. When teaching piano lessons to dedicated kids, I can go through a first-year piano book in half a year. Sometimes, it takes even less time. Kids who care about learning piano are a teacher's enjoy.
Sometimes it is nice to teach piano lessons to older adults, looking for an artistic release. One of the great things about teaching to adult students is that you don't have to nag. Either they will practice or they won't. When they don't practice, it is not really a problem since they don't have any parents that you have to deal with. When they do practice, you get to watch them accomplish greater and greater things as students. It is nice to not have to act as a parent and teacher at the same time.
For me as a teacher, the best experience is teaching piano lessons to serious musicians. Recently, I was teaching gospel piano to a seasoned bass player who wanted to expand his horizons. I was skeptical that knowing how to play bass would help him learn the piano. When I saw how quickly he was advancing in his studies, I was absolutely delighted. Apparently, he had already developed his musical ear to such a point that He could pick up everything I was teaching him quickly.
Lately, I have been teaching piano lessons to a real rising star. This kid is out of this world. He is probably one of the most brilliant students I've ever had, and he is only eight years old. I've never seen someone so dedicated to his instrument. So far I've never had a student who went further playing the piano than I have gone, but this might be the first one. If he is, it will be nice to see. Every teacher has a student that transcends him at some point in his life and I have been waiting for mine. Maybe one day he will thank me for teaching him to play piano as he accepts some prestigious award.
