Music is of course, a subjective thing and everyone has their likes and dislikes. However, there are certain songs that become classics and appear on countless polls over the years. These songs are in Top 100 Songs lists and feature some long standing artists. Many of the songs voted for are covered by lots of acts. Trends come and go and modern tastes have an affect on the polls but a lot of songs stand the test of time.

No list of favorites could exist without the presence of The Beatles. Most voted for songs are usually Hey Jude or Yesterday. John Lennon is represented too as a solo artist and Imagine is the track that is normally selected.

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen is another staple of Top 100 Songs lists. It was a longer than usual single and was accompanied by a promotional video, before they had become commonplace. Written by Freddie Mercury, it has an operatic sweep and is one of the most ambitious pop records to be recorded. Originally released in 1975, it is the only record to be a UK number one Christmas hit on two separate occasions.

The surge of guitar bands in the UK in the 1990s was led by Oasis. Their songwriter, Noel Gallagher has produced some memorable records. The track, Don't Look Back in Anger appears on the What's the Story, Morning Glory album and is a thoughtful song about life in a rock and roll band. It reached number one in the UK charts and has been used in several television programs.

Reggae's biggest ambassador was Bob Marley, a music legend to many and sorely missed. His most famous record, made with his backing group, The Wailers is No Woman, No Cry. It was first released in 1974 and the most popular version and the one that is remembered in Top 100 Songs polls is the live take. The song has also been covered by a variety of artists, including The Fugees, Joan Baez, NOFX and Boney M.

Record producer Phil Spector was in great demand in the 1960s. He had developed his own sound in the studio and enjoyed a lot of chart success. One of the songs he produced became a classic hit for the Righteous Brothers. Called Unchained Melody, it was released in 1965 and Bobby Hatfield impressed everyone with his sensitive vocal delivery. It constantly appears in Top 100 Songs lists and the Righteous Brothers version remains the definitive one. The song has also been recorded by Barry Manilow, Elvis Presley and Gene Vincent.
